Description
Levonorgestrel 1.5mg is a single-dose emergency contraceptive tablet used to help prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure (e.g. condom breakage or missed pill).
The active ingredient, levonorgestrel, is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone. It works by preventing or delaying ovulation and may also stop fertilisation or implantation of a fertilised egg. The tablet does not terminate an existing pregnancy.
Levonorgestrel is most effective the sooner it is taken, ideally within 12 hours, and its effectiveness declines the longer you wait within the 72-hour window.
